On-paper qualifications aren't required, but camps will want to hire someone who is comfortable working with the camera equipment. If you have your own gear, and use it regularly, it's a good idea to make a showcase video in your application that displays your skills capturing photo or video, as well as editing your content.

Working as a photography/videography instructor is a fantastic opportunity to improve your own skills as well as to improve campers’ skills using cameras and video equipment.

Being a camp photographer/videographer gives you the opportunity to take some amazing photos and videos of the breathtaking scenery surrounding your camp as well as taking photos and videos of campers that will be sent back to parents at home.

You also need to show that you are capable of using digital editing software, such as Photoshop, and that you are prepared to work long days, as this role includes capturing evening activities.

what does a photographer or videographer do at camp?

In this role, each day is different. One moment, you could be teaching your photography and videography skills to campers, and the next you could be capturing photos of campers to send home to their parents.

Most instructors prefer to bring their own cameras but most camps will have their own equipment that is available to use if you don’t take a DSLR with you.

Being a photographer/videographer at camp is extremely fun to do and is probably one of the most active and involved roles on camp. It’s a fantastic feeling to see how far your campers have come on as a result of your help.

What if I don't have any qualifications?

Short answer - it might not be a problem. For most activities, you won't need any particular qualifications to teach your activity at camp. For others, we may be able to provide training before camp starts - you'll still need a decent amount of experience in your activity, but we'll make sure you're ready before the campers start arriving. The best thing to do is apply for the role you want, and if it doesn't work out, you may be able to lock down a similar role. Whatever you end up doing, you'll still be fully trained for camp!

Do I still get days off?

Of course! Everyone needs time to recharge their batteries after an exciting but hectic week at camp, as well as the opportunity to explore the local area and further afield. Most camps will give you a 24 hour block of free time every week, whilst some others provide 2-4 days off in a row every few weeks.

Do I need to bring equipment?

Some camps will want you to bring equipment for certain activities, but this will likely only be in the form of clothes and personal gear, but they’ll let you know this once you’re hired. Most often, you won’t have to bring any specialist equipment, with Canadian summer camps being equipped with state of the art facilities to develop the campers’ skills, as well as yours.
